Increases the total alkalinity of pool water without raising the pH out of the desired range of 7.2 to 7.6. Makes your pH and chlorine levels easier to control. Most pools should have an alkalinity reading of around 100-120 ppm. Low alkalinity can cause equipment and plaster damage. A low total alkaline reading is also indicative of corrosive pool water, a blue or green cast to the water, and difficulty in holding chlorine residuals. If the alkalinity is too low or too high, the pH of the pool water will be difficult to maintain in the proper range. One pound will increase the total alkalinity of 7,500 gallons of water by approximately 8 ppm.
